Peri-Meno-What? The Perimenopause Chronicles

A few years back I made a video about the the five things that they don’t tell you about perimenopause. It is actually the second most popular video on my YouTube channel. Yes, I have a YT channel, in fact I have 3, but that is another story for another time.

Any who, back to the topic at hand, Perimenopause. I know some of y’all are saying, Peri meno what?

A little over ten years ago, in my early 30s, my breasts started to grow, I started growing a noticeable beard, and I started having hot flashes. At that time, I was confused, who wouldn’t be? I was clearly experiencing menopausal symptoms, but I was nowhere near the age that we associate with going through “the change.” So, I was convinced that since I couldn’t possibly be experiencing menopause, something was terribly wrong with me.

 I went to the doctor, and while she could see that there were hormonal issues, there was no clear reason for them to be happening so early in my life. She checked my thyroid, blood levels, and ran every other test imaginable and came up with nothing. So we chalked it up to just a hormonal imbalance, and that was essentially it.

Meanwhile, the boobs still grew, first to  Ds and then DDs….and then there was the beard.

I was turning into a very voluptuous man at 35.

…and nobody could tell me why…


So fast forward, to the year I turned 40. Which was five years ago, I discovered something called Perimenopause. Its the time between, before, or  around menopause. As opposed to menopause, which is defined by actually not having a period beyond a year.

So basically, you don’t just wake up one day and you’re no longer fertile. Menopause doesn’t just happen. Because of course, that would be too easy. No, we actually have a period of time where we actually “go through” the change. It is a process. And for some of us, it is as long process. A long, drawn out, sometimes extremely miserable, agonizing process.

And, did you know that this process can start as early as 28 for some women?

Yeah…you could theoretically be experiencing it right now…

…at 29 and a half…

…today while your boobs are still perky and back fat is still only something your grandma has.

And you thought you were just hot blooded.

By the time I was 40, I was experiencing more of the perimenopause symptoms, and boy, are there a bunch of them.

Here were mine:

erratic periods,

hot flashes

night sweats

weight gain…man, did I gain weight

hair thinning

hormanal acne

eye/hair dryness…and yes you can experience dryness in other places, if you know what I mean

stinky sweat, especially in the boob area

unbalanced vaginal PH



aches and pains

Don’t get it twisted, there are so many more, just read the comments on my video.

So once I found out what it actually was that I was dealing with, thanks to Dr. Oz, btw, and a couple of books that I read, I could begin to take the necessary steps to combat this monster. And now I hope to help those of you out there who are suffering with “going through the change” as well.

Although it can be hell on wheels to go through the madness, Perimenopause can be totally manageable. And since I am still one of the fertile masses, meaning I haven’t stopped having my period, we can go through this change business together in a new series that I am starting on the blog and on my channel called the Perimenopause Chronicles. In this series I will share with you resources, tips and techniques to overcome the battle of the hormones. It doesn’t have to be scary or hopeless, and it can even be a humorous journey if you’re open. I do hope that you will join me.
